System Integration: when the pieces stop negotiating

1 — The question
Separate components each protect their own specification. But the interfaces between them — gain structure, impedance, clock references, physical layout — are where real systems quietly lose quality. What does integration look like when the whole chain is designed by one team?
2 — Why it matters
The Tikpal Audio System is only worth building if the whole beats the sum. That requires decisions no third-party pairing can make: amplifier presets that assume the speaker’s measured impedance and directivity, gain staging that assumes the source’s output level, placement guidance that assumes both.
3 — Our approach
- Per-speaker DSP presets loaded through Amp One, documented in the measurement archive like any other tuning artefact.
- Fixed, documented gain structure from source output to amplifier input.
- Wiring and placement treated as part of the engineering, shipped labelled and measured.
- AI Soundscapes: generating calm, controllable ambient beds that play to the system’s measured low-level behaviour — content engineered for the chain, part of this direction’s research.
4 — What we have learned
Placement presets capture most of the benefit of full room correction for ordinary rooms: desk and near-wall cases account for the large, predictable spectral deviations, and one measured preset fixes them without microphones in the customer’s home.
5 — Open questions
- How far AI Soundscapes content should be tuned to a system’s measured noise floor and directivity.
- Whether the system bundle should carry a factory end-to-end verification certificate with its serial numbers.
